JIRA Format Guide
JIRA — Atlassian's markup language used in Jira, Confluence, and other Atlassian products for rich text formatting
About JIRA Format
JIRA markup is a lightweight markup language developed by Atlassian for use in their suite of products, including Jira (issue tracking), Confluence (wiki and documentation), and Bitbucket (code hosting). It provides a simple syntax for formatting text with bold (*bold*), italic (_italic_), headings (h1. through h6.), links, images, tables, code blocks, and lists.
The JIRA markup syntax is designed to be intuitive and easy to learn, allowing users to quickly format issue descriptions, comments, and documentation without needing HTML knowledge. It supports structured content including ordered and unordered lists, tables with headers, inline and block code snippets, color formatting, panels, and macros for advanced content rendering.
Advantages
- Universal across the entire Atlassian ecosystem (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket)
- Simple and intuitive syntax that is easy to learn
- Supports rich formatting: bold, italic, headings, tables, code blocks
- Built-in support for links, images, and attachments
- Panel and macro support for advanced content layouts
- Color and text effect formatting options
- Widely adopted in enterprise project management workflows
- Supports mentions, emoji, and status labels
Disadvantages
- Atlassian-specific — not widely recognized outside the Atlassian ecosystem
- Not a standard markup language (unlike Markdown or HTML)
- Limited tooling and editor support outside Atlassian products
- Syntax differs from more popular alternatives like Markdown
- Newer Atlassian products are moving toward a WYSIWYG editor instead
- No formal specification or standardization
