EPUB3 Format Guide
EPUB 3.0 — the modern open standard for reflowable electronic publications with HTML5, CSS3, MathML, and SVG support
About EPUB3 Format
EPUB 3.0 is the latest major revision of the EPUB standard, maintained by the W3C (previously IDPF). Released in 2011 and updated with EPUB 3.2 in 2019, it builds on HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript technologies to deliver rich, interactive, and accessible digital publications. EPUB3 supports MathML for mathematical equations, SVG for scalable vector graphics, media overlays for synchronized audio narration, and advanced accessibility features including ARIA roles and semantic inflection.
Unlike its predecessor EPUB 2.0, EPUB3 provides native support for vertical writing systems (CJK languages), right-to-left text (Arabic, Hebrew), embedded fonts, audio/video elements, and scripted interactivity. It is the recommended format for modern e-book publishing and is supported by Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, Readium, and most modern reading systems.

About EPUB3 Format
EPUB 3.0 is the current generation of the open e-book standard, developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) and now maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). It represents a significant evolution from EPUB 2.0, incorporating modern web standards like HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript to create rich, interactive digital publications.
EPUB3 vs EPUB 2.0
While EPUB 2.0 was based on XHTML 1.1 and CSS 2.1, EPUB3 adopts HTML5 and CSS3 as its content document format. This enables native support for MathML equations, SVG graphics, embedded audio and video, JavaScript interactivity, and advanced typography features like vertical writing and ruby annotations. EPUB3 also introduces Media Overlays for synchronized text-audio playback, making it ideal for audiobook hybrids and accessibility features. The format uses the .epub file extension for both versions.
Key Features
EPUB3 provides comprehensive accessibility support through ARIA roles, semantic structure, and media overlays that enable text-to-speech synchronization. It supports fixed-layout documents for graphic-intensive content like comics and children's books, alongside traditional reflowable text. The format handles multiple scripts and writing directions natively, supports embedded OpenType and WOFF fonts, and allows publishers to include interactive elements through JavaScript. The Navigation Document replaces the older NCX table of contents with an HTML5-based navigation system.
Common Applications
EPUB3 is the preferred format for modern e-book publishing, used by major platforms including Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, and Barnes & Noble. Publishers use EPUB3 for textbooks with MathML equations, children's books with fixed layouts, accessibility-compliant publications, and interactive educational content. The format is increasingly adopted for corporate training materials, digital magazines, and born-digital academic publications.
